FAQs

Nineteenth-century oil painting encompasses various movements from Romanticism to Realism, frequently focusing on dramatic lighting, atmospheric landscapes, and maritime scenes.

Authentic pieces from this period typically utilise ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved wooden frames featuring gesso and gilt liners.

Authentication involves examining canvas weave tightness, traditional stretcher frame construction, pigment ageing characteristics under magnification, and verifiable artist signatures or studio stamps.

Pairing historical canvases with contemporary neutral walls allows the rich tones and textures of the period frame to serve as a striking focal point.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, keeping the canvas away from direct sunlight, and consulting a professional conservator for periodic cleaning.
