The Meiji period (18681912) marked a monumental shift in Japanese art, driven by the opening of trade with the West. Japanese metalworkers applied traditional samurai armour-making and sword-fitting techniques to create highly detailed, naturalistic bronze sculptures that captivated international markets at world expositions.

These sculptures were predominantly produced using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue), which allowed for intricate detail and undercuts. The alloy typically consisted of copper, tin, and sometimes zinc or lead, finished with chemical patination treatments to create rich brown, black, or variegated surface tones.

Authentic pieces from this era often feature artist signatures or foundry marks cast into the underside or incised directly into the metal. Look for meticulous hand-chased detailing in the fur and facial features, a heavy weight commensurate with solid bronze construction, and stable, aged patination rather than modern chemical finishes.

An antique bronze sculpture serves as a powerful focal point on flat horizontal surfaces like sideboards, mantels, or executive desks. Pair it with neutral backdrops, architectural lighting to highlight the patination, and minimal surrounding decor to let the craftsmanship command attention.

Maintain antique bronze by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent particulate accumulation. Avoid using chemical cleaners, polishes, or abrasive cloths, as these will strip the historical patina and diminish the long-term value of the metalwork.
