Description

The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted masking traditions from their neighbours, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples. There are three basic types used in a special dance of rejoicing called Goli, symbolising the social order. This mask is either a Kpan, (with elaborate coiffures and refined carving; they represent the Senior female in Goli ceremonies) or a Ndoma (an idealized portrait mask used at the close of ceremonies.)

This particular mask is elegantly carved and in very good condition. Light age related wear and tear

Baule masks originate from the Ivory Coast in West Africa and traditionally represent specific human spirits, ancestors, or mythical figures used during important community ceremonies, dances, and agricultural rituals.

Authentic pieces are hand-carved from indigenous dense tropical hardwoods, often featuring applied pigments such as kaolin clay for white highlights, and finished with natural organic oils and patina.

Authentication involves examining tool marks, natural ageing of the wood, appropriate surface wear from handling or ritual use, and traditional iconography specific to West African carvers.

Displaying the piece as a focal point on a neutral wall or mounting it on a dedicated metal stand allows the intricate carved details and dark wood tones to anchor modern rooms.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying chemical polishes.
