Hotei, derived from the Chinese monk Budai, represents contentment, good fortune, and generosity in East Asian culture, frequently depicted in Japanese art as a jovial, corpulent figure.

Meiji period bronzes were predominantly crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting method, often employing custom copper-alloy mixtures known as shakudo or standard bronze with rich chemical patination.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit deep, stable patination, meticulous hand-finishing details in the chiselling, heavy relative weight, and occasionally makers signatures or foundry seals on the base.

Such sculptural objects serve as focal points on credenzas, sideboards, or mantelpieces, providing textural contrast against minimalist architectural backgrounds or complementing natural wood surfaces.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes that strip the historic patina, and maintaining stable indoor humidity to prevent metal corrosion.
