Description

Master cutter, Augustin Edouart, loved to add props to his conversation pieces such as small pieces of furniture or children’s toys. Musical instruments were another popular choice and he would practise cutting these in advance adding them to his personal scrapbook. He also added this cleverly cut spaniel seated attentively on a chair. Amazingly, the dog and the chair have been cut as a single piece without any join or overlay.

Edouart’s scrapbooks of experimental cuttings as well as his archive volumes of silhouettes were mostly all lost to the sea when he was shipwrecked off the coast of Guernsey in 1829. The loss of his body of work left Edouart unable to continue working commercially so he retired to his native France. Some years ago a salvaged scrapbook came to light in a Parisian bookshop and this is the source of this fun silhouette.

The profile is presented in a period maple veneer frame. The frame has small losses to the veneer mostly confined to the corners.

Silhouette art gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as an accessible form of portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography. Master cutters used scissors to freehand profile likenesses from black paper, often capturing notable figures, domestic scenes, and animals with remarkable precision.

Authentic period silhouettes are usually crafted from black card or paper mounted onto a light background, frequently housed behind glass within wooden, papier-mache, or brass frames. The backing paper often exhibits age-related toning, foxing, or handmade watermarks characteristic of the era.

Authentication involves examining the paper texture, frame construction, and backing materials for signs of age such as hand-cut edges, oxidation, and period fixatives. Many authentic pieces also feature handwritten artist signatures, studio stamps, or biographical taxidermy-style notes on the reverse.

Antique silhouettes work exceptionally well when grouped together in gallery walls to create a focal point of historical interest and graphic contrast. Their neutral black and white colour palette allows them to integrate seamlessly into both minimalist and traditional interior schemes.

Paper art must be protected from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the paper and backing substrate. Framing should ideally utilise UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials while maintaining stable humidity levels to avoid mould growth and foxing.
