FAQs

An aneroid barometer measures atmospheric pressure using a flexible metal box rather than liquid mercury. Invented in the mid-19th century, they gained widespread popularity during the Victorian era for domestic weather forecasting.

Victorian barometers were typically housed in turned or carved wooden cases made from oak, mahogany, or walnut. The internal mechanisms incorporated brass components, and the dial faces were usually white enamel, paper, or silvered brass.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-specific typography on the dial face, hand-carved wooden bezels, and mechanical rather than digital components. Maker signatures, old bevelled glass, and patination on the brass parts also indicate age.

An antique wall barometer adds a layer of historic interest when hung in studies, hallways, or living rooms. It pairs well with traditional wood panelling, gallery walls, or balanced alongside modern minimalist furnishings to create contrast.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to protect the wood case and paper dial. The delicate internal mechanism should be handled with care and serviced only by a professional horologist.
