French side tables from the 19th and early 20th centuries were heavily influenced by neoclassical design principles, often incorporating refined classical proportions, cabriole or tapered legs, and decorative ormolu mounts to reflect the elegance of elite salons.

These pieces were traditionally handcrafted from dense tropical hardwoods like mahogany, frequently featuring hand-turned supports, mortise and tenon joinery, and cast brass or gilt bronze mounts for structural reinforcement and ornamentation.

Authenticity is identified through period-correct joinery methods, hand-cut dovetails or peg construction where applicable, natural oxidisation and patina on the timber surfaces, and age-consistent wear on the metal mounts rather than modern casting flaws.

Pair these traditional stands with clean-lined modern sofas or minimalist armchairs to create a sophisticated contrast, using the surfaces to display simple ceramic objects, bronze sculptures, or reading lamps.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the wood grain without using modern silicone-based polishes.
