Description

Antique silver half hunter pocket watch, 1919.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some light marking.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the three covers for London (import mark), 1919, with a sponsor’s mark for Arthur Rendell. In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

The front and sides of the case are in good condition, some little marks and some unevenness to the back of the watch. The front has a small central lens surrounded by dark blue enamel filled Roman numerals.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition (some reflection showing in the photo).

The dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands, including the special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

A half hunter pocket watch features a case with a glass window or aperture on the front cover, allowing the wearer to read the time quickly without opening the case, which was a popular design during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

These timepieces were typically constructed using sterling silver or gold for the outer case, brass and steel for the internal mechanical movement components, and enamel for the dial face.

Authentic pieces from this period can be identified through British hallmarks stamped on the inside of the case, indicating the metal purity, assay office, and date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated pocket watch stand or stored within a glass-topped collector cabinet on a desk or mantelpiece to highlight its craftsmanship.

To preserve mechanical pocket watches, they should be kept away from moisture and magnetic fields, gently wound at consistent intervals, and serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
