Victorian animal paintings often depict domestic animals, livestock, or wildlife in realistic or slightly anthropomorphic settings, capturing the sentimentality and rural focus of 19th-century Britain.

These works typically utilise ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas, housed within heavy timber frames featuring gesso ornamentation and gilding.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, age-appropriate craquelure in the oil paint, and the composition of the gesso on the frame.

An antique painting with an ornate gold frame serves as a striking focal point when hung against a moody, neutral wall or positioned to add classical contrast to minimalist spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and dusting the canvas and frame gently with a soft, dry brush.
