A Georgian miniature watercolour portrait is a small-scale painting, typically executed on ivory, vellum, or paper during the Georgian era, often commissioned to commemorate family members or loved ones.

These works typically utilised watercolour or gouache on a thin substrate, housed within protective frames made from wood, papier-mache, or metal with glass panels and brass bezels.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the paper or support fibres, the style of pigments, hand-written notes on the reverse, and period-appropriate framing techniques such as convex glass and cast brass hangers.

Such pieces are frequently displayed in gallery walls alongside modern artworks or placed on narrow wall spaces and mantels to introduce historical depth and intimate scale into contemporary rooms.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintaining stable relative humidity, and avoiding moisture exposure behind the glass frame.
