FAQs

Victorian watercolour paintings often feature detailed figurative subjects, genre scenes, and portraits with a strong emphasis on narrative emotion and precise pigment layering on heavy rag paper.

Artists of this era typically utilised gum arabic-based watercolours applied to hand-made cotton or linen rag paper, often framed behind glass with a protective card mount.

Authentication involves examining paper fibre texture under magnification, checking for period-correct artist signatures or monograms, and inspecting the backing materials for historic framing evidence.

Pairing historic art with contemporary minimalist walls and simple framing allows the narrative depth of the piece to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Watercolours must be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and displayed in stable environments with controlled humidity to protect the delicate paper and pigments.
