Primitive James Pratt Askrigg Wensleydale Stick Barometer

18th century
Sold 17 July 2025 · Sturmans Antiques
This “Primitive James Pratt Askrigg Wensleydale Stick Barometer” found a buyer.

It was listed by Sturmans Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A primitive George lll red walnut cased stick barometer by sought after Wensleydale clock maker James Pratt of Askrigg c.1820. The simple solid walnut case with elegantly shaped top and base and the edges with cock beaded trim. Engraved two piece scale, one for Summer readings and the other for Winter; the Winter scale unusually showing 'snow' and 'much snow' at the bottom of the scale. Mercury barometer tube to the centre of the scale, visible to the trunk with decorative brass securing bands; cistern to the base behind the turned cover. The scale engraved with the makers name James Pratt, Askrigg, a well known and collected Wensleydale clock maker (1787 - 1850). Presumably this instrument was specially commissioned as he was not noted as a barometer maker. Presented in excellent condition with a rich colour and polish to the case, the metalwork polished and the movement fully overhauled and working. Keep up to date via Instagram - sturmansantiques. Measures 40" long x 5.5" maximum width x 3.25" wide at the trunk x 2" maximum depth.

A stick barometer is a vertical meteorological instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure, using a column of mercury. They gained popularity in Britain during the late 17th and 18th centuries as scientific understanding of weather patterns advanced.

Traditional stick barometers are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the trunk and cistern cover. They feature hand-engraved brass or silvered scales and delicate glass capillary tubes containing mercury.

Authenticity is indicated by period construction techniques, hand-carved or turned wooden elements, and hand-engraved brass register plates featuring period typography. Original glass tubes, mercury contents, and natural patina on the wood further support authenticity.

An antique stick barometer functions well as a focal point on a narrow wall space, hallway, or study. Its vertical orientation and rich wood tones complement traditional, transitional, and minimalist spaces by introducing historical depth and tactile craftsmanship.

Preservation involves hanging the barometer away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent timber warping and finish degradation. The wooden case can be dusted with a soft, dry cloth, while mercury-containing tubes require professional handling if relocation is necessary.
