These late 19th-century Italian Grand Tour sculptures depict the Dogs of Alcibiades, modelled after Classical Roman copies of a lost Greek bronze original. Hand-carved from dark green serpentine marble, the pair shows seated Molossian hounds with detailed textures in the carved fur and collars, resting upon rectangular plinths with visible natural mineral veins and polished surfaces. Each figure measures 24 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Appropriate for a gentleman's library, the sculptures sit neatly on a mantelpiece or desk as decorative objects. The heavy stone construction provides stability for everyday display, bringing classical Italian style and deep green tones into the interior.

The Dogs of Alcibiades represent a famous classical sculpture of a Molossian hound, widely copied in marble and bronze during the 18th and 19th centuries as Grand Tour souvenirs.

Grand Tour models were predominantly hand-carved by Italian stonemasons using regional marbles and decorative hardstones, including green serpentine, Nero Marquina, Giallo Antico, and porphyry.

Authentic period carvings display subtle hand-tooling marks on unpolished bases, gentle surface wear at contact points, and natural variations within the stone matrix rather than machine-cut perfection.

Pair these sculptures symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, arrange them as bookends on a dark mahogany shelf, or place them atop a console table to introduce neoclassical balance.

Dust regularly using a dry microfiber cloth, avoid acidic liquid cleaners that etch natural marble surfaces, and handle carefully from the base to prevent tension on smaller carved features.
