The British watercolour tradition is characterised by the use of water-soluble pigments on paper, capturing atmospheric light, rural landscapes, and genre scenes with fluid brushwork and transparent washes.

Traditional watercolours were typically executed on handmade cotton or rag paper using finely ground pigments bound with gum arabic, often housed behind glass within wooden or gilt frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper texture, watermark evidence, genuine artist signatures, pigment composition under magnification, and the presence of age-appropriate oxidisation and mounting techniques.

An antique watercolour brings historic depth to contemporary spaces and is best displayed on neutral walls using conservation-grade framing to protect the artwork from ultraviolet light degradation.

To preserve antique watercolours, display them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, utilise UV-filtering conservation glass, and maintain stable indoor climatic conditions.
