Han Dynasty tomb figures, or mingqi, were created to accompany the deceased into the afterlife, serving as substitutes for living attendants, dancers, and guards to ensure comfort and status in the next world.

These sculptures were typically moulded or modelled from earthenware clay, often finished with a white slip and painted with mineral pigments such as red, ochre, and green, which frequently show patination and wear from centuries underground.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the clay body, mineral encrustations, traces of original pigments, firing characteristics, and often scientific testing such as thermoluminescence (TL) analysis to determine the age of the ceramic.

These sculptural antiquities work well as focal points on minimalist display consoles, within architectural shelving units, or mounted on bespoke stands, allowing their ancient form and muted pigments to contrast with clean, contemporary surfaces.

Ancient earthenware requires a stable indoor climate away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to protect fragile pigments and porous clay from degradation.
