FAQs

A Welsh dresser base is a traditional piece of lower cabinetry originating from Wales, typically featuring a combination of drawers and cupboards used historically for food preparation and storage.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers and brass or wooden hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-planed surfaces, tool marks, period-appropriate hardware, and the presence of age-related oxidisation and shrinkage in the wood.

An antique oak dresser can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing it with minimalist decor, neutral backdrops, or modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
