A banjo barometer is a type of weather-measuring instrument housed in a distinctive curved wooden case resembling a banjo, which became highly popular in British households during the 19th century.

These instruments typically feature solid wood cases such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often decorated with hand-carved scrolling foliage, complemented by brass bezels, white enamel or paper dials, and mercury or aneroid movement mechanisms.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved detailing without modern synthetic finishes, traditional glass faces, and maker signatures inscribed on the brass dial or scale plates.

This piece works effectively when mounted as a focal point on panelled walls in studies, hallways, or traditional living spaces, pairing well with other vintage horological and scientific instruments.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high moisture areas. Clean the wooden case gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid using harsh chemical polishes on the brass or dials.
