Description

The bulbous form features transfer-printed and hand-painted polychrome decoration, a pronounced scalloped rim, and a rope-twist gilded handle. Prominently displayed are the British, French, and Turkish flags inscribed with battle honors such as Alma, Inkerman, Balaclava, Sebastopol, Silistria, and Kalafat. Two royal coats of arms sit above laurel and oak sprays beneath a rising sun motif, with patriotic mottos: “May England for Ever Such Unity Boast!” and “The Union of England & France is Strength.”

A hand-inscribed dedication—“Sam Harolding, Born March 23rd 1855, Liverpool”—adds personalized historical value. Marked on the base with the initials “GFB” enclosed within a Staffordshire Knot, it stands as one of the rarest known variants of Crimean War jugs, particularly in such excellent condition.

Dimensions: Height: 20 cm | Width: 20 cm | Depth: 15 cm | Weight: 874 g

Condition: No cracks or restorations; tiny chip on the bottom; slight yellowing of interior enamel; gold scuffs on the rim; minor paint scuffs under images, inscriptions fully legible. Otherwise excellent antique condition.

Victorian commemorative pottery includes ceramic items produced to celebrate or record significant historical events, royal occasions, and military campaigns of the 19th century.

Staffordshire potters typically utilised earthenware bodies decorated with hand-applied transfer printing, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and gilt highlights.

Authentic pieces often feature period makers marks, typical crazing in the glaze, hand-finished enamel details, and wear consistent with age and earthenware composition.

Historical ceramics add character and narrative depth when displayed as cabinet curiosities, mantelpiece focal points, or styled on open bookshelves alongside contemporary objects.

Antique earthenware should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth and hand-washed only when necessary using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or immersion in water.
