Description

Fresh still life of a fish - Sea Bream and a lemon buy the French artist Charles Betremieux (1919 - 1997) who was a creative artist.

Betremieux was born in 1919 and was predominantly inspired by the 1930s. He studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes with Raymond Debieve where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded:

The period of the 1930s is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. Surrealism continued to dominate in Europe, and had influence internationally. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico, worked to integrate the ideas posed by Surrealism into their radical political ideologies, developing a new kind of magic realism.

Still life painting emerged as a significant genre in Western art during the late 16th century, particularly in the Netherlands and Flanders, where artists focused on inanimate everyday objects, food, and household items to symbolise themes of mortality and abundance.

Traditional oil paintings are typically executed on stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, utilising ground pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, applied with hog bristle or sable brushes.

Authentic period pieces are identified through examining canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition under magnification, and natural ageing characteristics such as fine craquelure and oxidised varnish layers.

An antique painting can add depth and character to contemporary spaces when framed simply and hung at eye level against a neutral wall, allowing the historic textures and muted palette to create a focal point.

Preservation requires stable environmental conditions with moderate relative humidity and temperature, protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the painted surface.
