This Chinese decorative sculpture takes the form of a fish, originating from the 1900 period in a Chinese art style. Fashioned from yellow and celadon jade hardstone with a smooth finish, the miniature piece displays carved scales along the body, protruding round eyes, and a broad translucent fan-shaped tail fin, alongside carved fins underneath. Measuring 5 cm high and 19 cm wide, the sculpture is compact enough for display in various interior spaces. Placed within a home today, the sculpture suits placement on a bookshelf as an ornamental accent. The stone composition and organic marine motifs bring traditional Asian craftsmanship into living rooms, studies, or display cabinets. The subtle colour variations within the hardstone complement diverse interior surfaces and decor themes.

FAQs

In Chinese tradition, fishparticularly goldfish and carpsymbolise wealth, abundance, and perseverance, frequently represented in carved jade or hardstone decorative objects.

Carvings were predominantly crafted from nephrite or jadeite, using abrasive pastes and manual rotary tools to achieve precise details such as scales and fins.

Authentic jade displays natural surface variations, cool temperature to the touch, and distinct hand-carved tool marks rather than perfectly uniform moulded edges.

Miniature hardstone carvings function well as decorative accents displayed on a curated bookshelf, desk, or inside a glass curiosity cabinet.

Clean carved jade gently using a soft-bristled brush with lukewarm water and mild soap, ensuring complete drying with a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals.
