This Edwardian oil painting on canvas dates from 1910 and portrays a rural landscape with heavy draught horses, an equestrian harness, and a stream crossing rendered in warm brown tones. The composition depicts a boy riding a grey heavy horse drinking from a stream alongside a bay horse on a rural lane. The artwork is housed within an original gilt frame that has been cleaned, presenting the piece in ready to hang condition by artist George Vernon Stokes R.B.A. Measuring 68.5 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, the painting fits well in a rustic farmhouse interior. Position this artwork above a sideboard in a dining room, living room, or hallway to bring a classic equestrian character to the space. The visual elements complement traditional and country interiors, offering a window into early twentieth-century rural life through the medium of oil on canvas. The framed piece provides a distinct focal point on a wall while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of its period.

Early 20th-century British rural genre paintings document traditional agricultural life, working animals, and countryside landscapes, capturing rural routines during the Edwardian and interwar eras.

Artists typically painted with oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often primed with gesso ground and protected with natural resin varnish.

Authentication involves verifying artist signatures, examining brushwork technique, assessing age-appropriate surface craquelure, and evaluating frame hardware and canvas stretcher construction.

Equestrian oil paintings serve as key visual anchors above sideboards or mantels, adding historical depth when paired with natural timber furniture and muted neutral wall tones.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush and consulting a professional conservator for cleaning.
