The Meiji period (18681912) marked a major era of modernisation in Japan, during which master metalworkers produced exceptional bronze sculptures for both domestic appreciation and international export, combining traditional casting techniques with refined detailing.

These pieces were typically cast using the traditional lost-wax method in high-grade copper alloys, often referred to as bronze or shibuichi, followed by meticulous hand-chasing, patination, and sometimes signature inlay work by master artisans.

Authentic pieces generally feature deep, stable patination, precise hand-finished details, and frequently carry artist signatures or studio marks cast or engraved on the base or reverse.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a mantelpiece, console, or bookshelf, allowing its dark metallic tones and sculptural form to contrast against neutral walls or minimalist contemporary furniture.

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding chemical polishes that can strip the historic patina, and keep the object away from excessive moisture and direct sunlight.
