FAQs

Satirical caricature maps emerged during the 19th and early 20th centuries, often used as political commentary or whimsical illustrations that anthropomorphised geographical regions and countries.

Traditional pieces were typically hand-drawn or etched on paper, often finished with watercolour washes, and housed in simple timber frames protected by glass.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit genuine paper ageing, plate marks where applicable, period-appropriate framing techniques, and hand-applied pigments rather than modern digital dot-matrix printing.

These framed pieces work exceptionally well when hung in a gallery wall arrangement or styled on a narrow wall space to add narrative depth and historical character to a room.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique watercolours should be kept away from direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and framed using acid-free materials.
