Rare Meissen Demitasse Cup and Saucer, C.1815

19th century
Description

An antique porcelain hand-painted demitasse cup with a saucer, created nearly 200 years ago by the renowned Meissen factory. The yellow background, combined with intricate gilded patterns, emphasizes the luxurious nature of the pieces. The center of the saucer is adorned with a stylized compass rose design, serving as a striking decorative element.

The set features three vibrant scenes of courting couples—one on the cup and two on the saucer—all meticulously hand-painted. The artwork is of exceptional quality, resembling miniature paintings. It is quite possible that the courting scenes were inspired by the works of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), a prominent French Rococo artist.

The bases of both pieces are marked with the iconic Meissen crossed swords, confirming their authenticity. This type of decoration is extremely rare and seldom available on the market—an exceptional find for any collector!

The Meissen factory, founded in 1710 in Germany, is one of the oldest and most prestigious porcelain manufacturers in Europe. It gained fame for its high-quality hard-paste porcelain, often referred to as "white gold." Meissen is particularly renowned for its intricate designs, including elaborate Baroque and Rococo-style figurines and tableware. For centuries, the factory’s creations have been highly sought after by collectors and royalty, solidifying its legacy as a pioneer in the art of porcelain-making.

Please carefully examine the accompanying photographs, as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to assist you.

This nineteenth-century Meissen porcelain demitasse cup and saucer set displays an Empire style. Fashioned from hard-paste porcelain and finished in a vibrant yellow ground with extensive gold leaf gilding, the set includes an arched handle on the cup and scalloped cartouches framing hand-painted pastoral scenes of courting couples on both pieces, alongside intricate gilded border patterns. The saucer measures 14.5 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, while the cup stands 6.7 cm high with a 6.9 cm top diameter and a total width of 9.5 cm including the handle. The saucer possesses a chip on the inner edge and another on the outer edge, whereas the cup remains flawless. Suitable for display in a collector cabinet or on a bookshelf in a study or living room, this tableware functions as a decorative ornamental piece or a delicate display item. The miniature paintings offer detailed visual interest, complemented by the bright yellow glaze and the reflective quality of the gold leaf borders. The compact dimensions allow placement in limited display spaces while retaining the visual presence typical of nineteenth-century European porcelain.

During the early nineteenth century, the Meissen manufactory produced high-grade hard-paste porcelain heavily influenced by Empire and Neoclassical tastes, characterised by rich ground colours, intricate gilding, and finely rendered painted miniatures.

These items were crafted from true hard-paste porcelain composed of kaolin and petuntse, decorated with hand-applied overglaze enamel pigments, and finished with burnished gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces feature the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, characteristic translucency in the porcelain paste, precise hand-painted details, and evidence of hand-burnished gilt application.

Fine porcelain demitasse sets are frequently displayed within glazed cabinets, on floating wall shelves, or placed alongside antique books on mahogany sideboards to introduce refined historical colour.

Washing should be conducted by hand using tepid water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or dishwashers that could strip the delicate overglaze gilding and enamelling.
