Niello is a black metallic alloy of sulphur, silver, copper, and lead used as an inlay on engraved metal. It experienced widespread popularity across Europe and Russia during the 19th century, particularly for decorative items such as pocket watches, snuff boxes, and watch chains.

These timepieces are typically constructed from a silver base, often sterling or continental silver grades, featuring intricately hand-engraved designs filled with the dark niello paste. Some pieces also incorporate gold accents or rose gold plated details on shields, monograms, and associated link chains.

Authentic pieces exhibit genuine hand-engraved metalwork filled with a matte or satin-finish dark metallic inlay that shows consistent age-related wear. Hallmark stamps on the inner case, mechanical cylinder or lever movements, and period-appropriate hand-cut components also confirm authenticity.

An antique pocket watch and chain can be displayed on a dedicated desk stand, housed within a glass display cloche, or arranged flat on a velvet tray inside a gentlemans study or library setting.

Preservation requires storing the item in a dry, low-humidity environment to prevent tarnishing and corrosion of the delicate alloy inlay. Cleaning should be done strictly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive metal polishes that can strip the niello composition from the engraved channels.
