Named after French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette, paper cut profiles gained immense popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries as an accessible form of portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography.

Traditional silhouettes were typically crafted using black paper cut by hand or painted with India ink on a light background, then housed in simple wood, papier-mache, or brass frames.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the backing paper for age-related oxidation, the type of hand-cut edges, the characteristics of the framing materials, and the presence of period glues or fasteners.

Antique silhouettes work well when grouped in gallery walls alongside modern frames or placed on narrow wall spaces and mantels to introduce historic texture and a graphic black-and-white element.

Paper artifacts should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the paper and ink, and maintained in stable humidity-controlled environments behind UV-protective glass.
