FAQs

An 18th century oak dresser base is a heavy, functional piece of dining furniture traditionally used for food preparation and storage, featuring drawers and sometimes cupboards beneath a flat wooden top.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid English oak, often incorporating secondary woods like pine or elm for drawer linings and backs, combined with brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, pegged mortise and tenon joints, natural timber shrinkage, and genuine patination accumulated over centuries of use.

An antique oak dresser base can be grounded in a contemporary dining room or hallway as a contrasting focal point, topped with minimalist ceramics or architectural lighting to balance the aged timber.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic timber surface.
