FAQs

Eighteenth-century commodes typically feature elegant proportions, architectural facades, and fine cabinet-making techniques such as veneering and marquetry, transitioning from ornate baroque curves to more restrained neoclassical lines.

These pieces were constructed using solid timber carcases overlaid with decorative veneers like burr walnut, oak, or mahogany, often complemented by hand-cut dovetail joints, marble tops, and cast gilt-bronze mounts.

Authenticity is identified through construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, old tool marks, historical fixings, and the natural ageing and patina of the wood and metalwork.

This piece can serve as a striking focal point in a contemporary living room or hallway, paired with minimalist modern art or clean-lined seating to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber without sealing it.
