FAQs

The cavalier style typically depicts subjects from the 17th century, specifically supporters of King Charles I during the English Civil War, often characterised by flamboyant attire, plumed hats, and swords.

Antique watercolours were generally painted on heavy rag paper using water-soluble pigments, housed in hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gilt composition.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age on the paper such as foxing or toning, hand-mixed pigments, period framing techniques, and sometimes visible artist signatures or inscriptions on the reverse.

Pairing historical portraiture with contemporary minimalist walls creates a striking contrast that highlights the detailed craftsmanship of the gilt frame and artwork.

Antique watercolours should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading of pigments and degradation of the paper and gilt frame.
