Meiji period bronzes represent a pinnacle of Japanese metalworking craftsmanship, produced between 1868 and 1912 when traditional swordsmiths transitioned their skills to decorative art for international and domestic markets.

These pieces were typically cast using the lost-wax method, utilizing custom bronze alloys followed by chemical patination treatments to achieve deep, rich surface colours ranging from dark brown to black.

Authenticity is assessed through weight, the complexity and depth of the cold-chiselled surface details, natural patination patterns, and occasionally makers seals or signatures cast into the base.

Antique bronzes serve as focal points when placed on minimalist surfaces such as wooden sideboards or open shelving, allowing their sculptural form and dark patina to contrast against neutral walls.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or polishes, as these can strip the historical patina and damage the metal surface.
