Description

An early 19thC Continental Renaissance Style Oil on Canvas, Gilt Frame, 80cm.

A striking 19th century oil on canvas, framed portrait painting, probably Northern European, probably Italian and in the Italian renaissance style.

A provocative scene which is not immediately obvious, featuring a finely painted church or convent with finely decorated biblical wall scenes and 2 central figures. A crouching artist with a palette board in his left hand is appealing to a young nun of beauty, amour et seduction, the artist is holding both her hands in his right whilst she is showing some restraint.

A skilful cartoon, perhaps a scene from a play or fable. The characters wear renaissance clothing within a convent, or high church, behind the nun stands a mother and child portrait he is painting, probably a commission on behalf of the church. The artist sits on an Italian sgabello chair.

A remarkable painting with accurate content and skilfully illustrated, demonstrating a competent hand, an excellent use of colour and fine detail.

Please note, the lower section shows evidence of same distress with some paint loss.

Currently available as it is or we may withdraw listing and consign to the workshop for repair, it is a simple repair as the distress does not affect the main areas of subject but mostly block colour, it remains an excellent painting and art piece.

The Renaissance revival style in the 19th century drew heavy inspiration from the artistic techniques, compositions, and religious or mythological themes of the 15th and 16th centuries, focusing on classical perspective and rich detailing.

Traditional pieces typically feature hand-stretched woven canvas primed with gesso, painted with pigmented oil emulsions, and housed within carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gilt composition.

Authenticity is determined by examining the canvas weave, the type of stretcher frame, ageing characteristics of the oil medium such as fine craquelure, and the composition and tooling marks of the gilt frame.

An antique oil painting adds gravitas and depth when hung against neutral contemporary walls, serving as a focal point in a living room, hallway, or study, often paired with sleek modern lighting to create contrast.

Preservation requires hanging the canvas away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding chemical cleaners on the painted surface, and consulting a professional conservator for periodic cleaning and varnishing.
