Character jugs and Toby jugs from the Victorian and Edwardian eras frequently commemorated military heroes, politicians, and cultural figures, serving both functional and patriotic purposes in British homes.

These pieces were typically crafted from glazed earthenware or stoneware, often hand-painted with ceramic colours over a fired white glaze base.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit crazing in the glaze, hand-painted detailing with characteristic iron-oxide washes, and occasionally makers stamps or registration numbers on the base.

Displaying historical figural ceramics on a bookshelf or mantelpiece adds a layer of eclectic character and conversational heritage to a curated interior scheme.

Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, and avoid using liquid cleaners or immersing them in water to protect the aged glaze and hand-painted pigments.
