Still life painting focusing on floral arrangements gained immense popularity during the 17th century in the Netherlands and Flanders, later influencing British and European academic traditions throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional oil paintings from earlier periods were typically executed using ground pigment mixed with linseed or walnut oil, applied onto stretched canvas or wooden panels, and housed within carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting canvas ageing, crackle patterns in the oil paint layer, hand-carved joinery on the stretcher bars, and the construction methods and patination of the accompanying period frame.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points when hung against dark, moody wall colours to accentuate the rich tones of the canvas, or paired with minimalist modern furnishings to create a balanced dialogue between old and new.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and keeping the canvas surface free from dust using a soft, dry brush without chemical cleaners.
