FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolours typically focused on topographical landscapes, townscapes, and rural scenes, often characterised by a transparent wash technique on rag paper that captured subtle atmospheric effects and natural light.

These works were traditionally executed using water-soluble pigments on handmade or mould-made cotton and linen rag paper, mounted within paperboard mounts, protected by glass, and housed in hand-carved or molded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper fibres under magnification for rag content, checking for age-appropriate foxing and oxidation, identifying period-appropriate framing techniques, and looking for artist signatures or contemporary inscriptions on the reverse.

Antique artworks add historic depth to contemporary spaces and can be styled by hanging them singly on narrow wall spaces or incorporating them into a balanced gallery wall alongside modern abstract pieces.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free mount board and UV-filtering glass, hanging the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and maintaining stable indoor temperatures to prevent foxing, fading, and paper degradation.
