This “Trio of 1930s Sketches - Depicting Ballerinas by Jean Target” found a buyer.

Description

When I discovered these sketches of ballerinas by the French artist, Jean Target (1910 - 1997), I felt they were full of spontaneity and life. The first sketch of the ballerina with her arms outstretched, reminded me of the wonderful linocuts of Sybil Andrews. They appear to be from the artist's sketchbook and executed in crayon and charcoal. Each has been signed and two carry notation of the ballet in question. They are being sold as unframed works on paper, however, we will happily discuss and undertake the framing of these lovely sketches if so desired. Measurements - dancer with her arms outstretched 24.5 cm x 31.5 cm / the two sketches of the ballet dancers on points 32 cm x 25 cm.

Declaration

Culvertons has dated this Vintage Ballerina Sketch Drawing to the 1940s.

Artwork from the 1930s often emphasised fluid lines, minimalism, and dynamic movement, capturing subjects like dancers with expressive gestures rather than strict academic realism.

These works typically utilised graphite, charcoal, or coloured chalk on off-white or cream-toned cartridge paper, sometimes displaying natural ageing such as toning and foxing.

Authentication relies on examining the paper fibres under magnification, checking for genuine plate marks or hand-drawn pencil pressure, and identifying period-appropriate paper ageing rather than modern digital printing dots.

Mounting the piece with a neutral archival card and a simple slim wood frame allows the historic artwork to serve as a sophisticated focal point on a gallery wall or narrow partition.

To prevent fading and deterioration, works on paper must be framed using UV-protective glazing, acid-free backing boards, and kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
