Nineteenth-century maritime paintings typically focus on coastal scenes, shipping vessels, and harbours, capturing realistic lighting and atmospheric weather conditions through layered oil glazes.

These artworks were traditionally created using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames often featuring gesso ornamentation.

Authenticity is identified through age-appropriate canvas oxidation, stable craquelure, period-correct framing techniques, and occasionally artist signatures or maker stamps on the stretcher bars.

An antique painting serves as a striking focal point when hung against a moody, saturated wall colour, bridging traditional craftsmanship with clean, modern furnishings.

Preservation requires hanging paintings away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintaining stable relative humidity levels, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the canvas and the gilt frame.
