FAQs

Late 19th-century Scottish landscape painting is characterised by a romantic interpretation of dramatic topography, moody skies, and atmospheric lighting, heavily influenced by the traditions of the Royal Scottish Academy.

These artworks were typically created using ground pigment oil paints applied to stretched woven linen or cotton canvas, supported by wooden strainer frames and often housed in gilt plaster and wood frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, pigment age, craquelure patterns, stretcher frame construction, and artist signatures or exhibition labels on the reverse.

An antique landscape provides a focal point when hung against a rich, moody wall colour, paired with traditional task lighting or balanced within a minimalist contemporary gallery wall.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, and periodically dusting the canvas gently with a soft, dry brush.
