Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A commode is a type of low chest of drawers that originated in France during the late 17th century, evolving from a cabinet or chest placed on a stand. By the 19th century, these pieces became staple functional furniture in French households, often reflecting regional cabinet-making traditions and local timber availability.

Authentic period commodes are constructed predominantly from solid regional hardwoods such as French oak, utilizing traditional joinery methods including hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, mortise and tenon frames, and pegged joints without modern metal fasteners.

Authentication involves examining the interior wood for tool marks such as pit-sawing or hand-planing, checking for irregular hand-cut dovetails, inspecting the backboards and drawer linings for age-appropriate shrinkage and patina, and verifying that the hardware corresponds to the period style.

This piece can serve as a grounded focal point in a modern bedroom or living space, balancing clean minimalist lines with rich natural timber texture. It pairs effectively with contemporary art above or simple ceramic objects on top to bridge historical character with modern design.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources that can cause timber to split. Cleaning should be limited to dusting with a dry, soft cloth, occasionally applying a quality natural beeswax to nourish the wood without building up heavy chemical residues.
