FAQs

Relief-moulded terracotta and ceramic jugs gained immense popularity during the 19th century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Renaissance motifs such as mythological figures and bacchanalian scenes.

These vessels were typically crafted from refined red clay or terracotta, shaped using metal moulds to achieve high-relief sculptural details before being fired in a kiln.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural ageing of the clay, wear patterns on the base, consistency of the interior glazing or finish, and the crispness of the moulded relief details.

An antique terracotta jug can be styled as a standalone sculptural centrepiece on a sideboard or mantelpiece, or used to hold dried botanicals to add earthy texture to modern spaces.

Terracotta should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using water or chemical cleaners, especially on unglazed or porous surfaces, to prevent moisture retention and surface degradation.
