Can I wear an antique watch every day?

Modern life presents hazards for early timepieces. Water resistance is usually non-existent in cases made before the nineteen thirties. Washing your hands or walking in rain can introduce moisture to the movement. Shock protection also took decades to develop. Dropping an early mechanical watch onto a hard surface will likely break the balance staff. Keep them for occasional wear rather than rough daily use.

My grandfather left me his old gold trench watch but it stopped working years ago and I wonder if it is even possible to get parts to fix it now?

Watchmakers can usually repair these early movements. The mechanisms are relatively straightforward compared to complicated modern automatic calibres. Most competent horologists know how to strip and service them. Sourcing exact factory parts can take time. Sometimes a maker needs to cut a new stem or fabricate a missing gear from scratch on a lathe. This manual work requires specific traditional skills.

How do you wind a manual watch?

Turn the crown clockwise while it sits flush against the case. You should feel a slight resistance and hear a clicking sound as the mainspring tightens. Stop turning the moment you feel firm resistance. Forcing the crown past this point will snap the mainspring and require a full mechanical rebuild.

I noticed the silver case on my watch has turned quite black in the drawer and I want to clean it but should I use normal metal polish on it?

Silver naturally oxidises when exposed to sulphur in the air. This dark tarnish looks dramatic but sits only on the surface of the metal. Avoid liquid metal polishes. The chemicals can easily seep past the crystal or the winding stem and damage the delicate dial or movement inside. Use a dry jeweller's cloth instead. Gentle rubbing will lift the tarnish from the flat surfaces while leaving the darker oxidation in the crevices to highlight the case details.
