Japanese figural sculpture in bronze and carved wood, made for display in the home or, in the case of netsuke, to hang a pouch from a sash.
Netsuke means root-attach: ne for root, tsuke for fasten. They toggled a pouch or box to the sash of a robe with no pockets.
