Japanese carved wooden bears, known as Kibori Kuma, originated in Hokkaido during the early 20th century. Influenced by traditional Ainu culture and European woodcarving techniques introduced to the region, these sculptures became a prominent rural craft during the Showa period.

These figures are hand-carved from single blocks of local Japanese wood, such as katsura or linden wood. Sculptors use specialised chisels to create fur textures before applying dark stains, lacquers, or wax polishes to define the shape.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chiselled fur grooves, realistic or stylized anatomical details, and subtle variation in tone. Many original Hokkaido figures feature artist signatures, regional wood marks, or maker stamps incised onto the underside of the base or paws.
