What timber are most Victorian dressers made from?

Pine dominates, at 78 of the 148 titles in the archive, and oak follows with 41. Between them they cover the great majority of the category. Everything else is a small tail. Mahogany appears in eight titles, and elm, walnut, rosewood, satinbirch and bird's-eye maple each show up occasionally.

Is a dresser base worth less than a full dresser?

Bases sit lower in the range than complete two-part dressers. Eight titles describe a base alone, and the lowest-priced sample in the archive is a two-drawer dresser base. That said, bases aren't all modest. The archive includes a potboard dresser base and a monumental country-house dresser base, both a long way from an ordinary kitchen piece.

Why are so many called Welsh dressers?

"Welsh" appears in 24 titles, used broadly for a tall racked dresser rather than as a strict place of making. Some go further and specify North Wales, South Wales or Talwrn. Regional labels are unusually specific for kitchen furniture here. West Country, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Scots pine all appear, alongside one Irish and one Hungarian example.

How precisely are these dressers dated?

Not very. Seventy-five listings say only "Victorian" and 25 only "19th Century", so a hundred of the 148 carry no year at all. The 28 with a clean year run from 1820 to 1910, the 1880s and 1850s leading. One sample is filed as 18th Century and one as 1910, so the label stretches at both ends.

What is a chicken coop dresser?

It's a dresser base with a slatted or barred compartment built in for poultry, a practical piece of farmhouse kitchen equipment. The term appears three times in the samples and nowhere else in the category.

How many Victorian dressers come up for sale?

Fifty-seven dealers have listed one on Sellingantiques, with roughly eighteen coming to market in a year. About half of those are pine kitchen or farmhouse dressers, and a quarter to a third are oak. Painted examples account for around one in twelve.
