Pouring boiling water into a cold soft-paste porcelain bowl risks cracking the body. Rinse them gently by hand rather than using a dishwasher.

Pouring tea into a deep saucer to cool was standard practice during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The broad surface area lowers the temperature quickly. People drank directly from the saucer while resting the cup on a small plate. This habit fell out of favour as Victorian table manners became more formal, but the deep saucer shapes remained in production for decades.
