Can I use the drawers for heavy tools?

Most of these chests handle light weight well. The drawer bottoms are often thin boards of cedar or ash meant for papers and small collectables. They aren't built for heavy loads. If you fill them with metal tools, the bases will bow and the runners will grind down faster, making the drawers stiff and difficult to pull out.

My grandfather left me one of these tall chests but the key is missing and that flap on the side is locked tight, so is there a way to open it without breaking the wood?

I have noticed that a lot of them have a top drawer that looks like two regular drawers from the outside but it actually drops down like a desk, was this normal?
