Good Early 19th Century Bronze Green Tara Buddha

Description

This is a wonderful 19th century original cast bronze of Green Tara with excellent detail to the figure.

Tara the Buddhist saviour goddess is widely popular in Nepal, Tibet and Mongolia. She is the feminine counterpart of the bodhisattva (Buddha to be) Avalokiteshvara. According to legend she came into existence from a tear of Avalokiteshvara which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose up a lotus flower which on opening revealed the goddess. Like Avalokiteshvara she is a compassionate deity who helps men to “cross to the other shore”. She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel as well as of spiritual travel along the path of enlightenment.

The piece is in perfect condition with a very attractive design and exceptional detail. The bronze has decorative tooling and a delightful colour with good antique patina to the original gilding.

The figure is in two sections with Tara sitting upon a lotus base.

This measures 27 cms in height and is 21 cms wide by 16 cms deep.
