London painter of Marine and Coastal scenes who lived in Greenwich and for many years had a studio
overlooking the Medway. He painted under the pseudonym WA Thornberry, W Anson as well as his exhibiting name ''Charles Thornley''. Under this mantle he exhibited 53 times at the Royal Academy.
This atmospheric scene of Fishing Boats in a Stormy sea is Thornley at his best, in its original Gilded frame shows why he is so collectible.
