FAQs

The lit bateau, or boat bed, emerged in France during the early 19th century under the Empire and Restoration periods, characterised by its scrolled headboard and footboard resembling the curve of a boat hull.

These beds are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, featuring hand-carved decorative motifs, joined frames, and often painted or gilded surface finishes.

Authentic pieces typically display period joinery techniques, hand-carved wood details rather than cast resin, and signs of age such as timber shrinkage and historical surface wear beneath modern upholstery.

A lit bateau serves as a central focal point in a bedroom and pairs well with neutral linens, minimalist bedside tables, and soft lighting to balance its ornate silhouette.

Maintain the wooden frame by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or humidity fluctuations, while treating the upholstered panels with appropriate fabric cleaners based on the textile composition.
