Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chiffonier is a specialised piece of furniture developed in the early nineteenth century, serving as a compact sideboard with cupboards below and often a shallow raised backboard above. Popular throughout the Regency and Victorian eras, it was designed for storing household linens and tableware while offering a surface for display.

Victorian chiffoniers were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently accented with flame mahogany or timber veneers. Drawer construction usually features hand-cut dovetail joints, while backboards were carved by hand and fitted to solid carcass frames.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of hand construction, including hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass or wooden escutcheons, and natural ageing or oxidisation on unfinished pine secondary woods. Additionally, fine flame mahogany veneers were applied over solid timber bases rather than modern composite materials.

A mahogany chiffonier functions well as a focal storage piece in a dining room, hallway, or living space. Styling the top surface with modern table lamps, ceramic stoneware, or contemporary artwork creates an effective balance between historical woodwork and modern decor.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding spray polishes that build up residue. Applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year protects the natural finish, while keeping the item away from direct sunlight and radiator heat prevents veneer movement.
