A Set of Oval Framed Butterfly Prints

19th century
Description

A pair of 19th Century beautifully illustrated chromolithographs of butterflies, moths and caterpillars. Dipicting life stages of various moths and butterflies, including caterpillars feeding on their native food sources, by W.F Kirby, circa 1885.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, natural history and the study of insects became a popular pursuit across Europe. Detailed illustrations were published in scientific folios and natural science books, often hand-coloured to assist in species identification and admired for display.

Original illustrations were produced using copperplate engraving or lithography on rag paper, often coloured by hand using watercolour pigments. Frames were frequently crafted from carved wood, plaster, or molded gesso with leaf gilding.

Authentic period prints usually display clear plate marks from copper pressings, natural paper aging or foxing, and subtle variations in hand-applied paint. Modern reproductions generally feature uniform dots from digital printing processes and lacks physical impression lines.

Arrange a set of four prints in a tight two-by-two grid or a linear horizontal row above a console table to create visual focus. Positioning them against dark heritage paint tones accentuates gilded borders and white paper backing.

Display works away from direct sunlight and moisture sources to prevent fading, paper degradation, and humidity damage. Clean the outer glass and gilded frames gently using a dry, soft microfiber cloth without chemical spray cleaners.
